"The Future of ColdFusion" - Ben Forta, Tim Buntel, Adam Lehman
Here's a google doc of the notes I took this morning at a half-day presentation by Ben Forta, Tim Buntel, and Adam Lehman entitled "The Future of ColdFusion." The meeting was sponsored by Carahsoft and was held at the Reagan Building in D.C.
A lot of the information isn't new if you've been monitoring the CFUG tour and the blogging from cf.objective(), but it was very nice to see lots of stuff about Scorpio all in one shot.

Did Adam mention his little pet project for using the new onMissingMethod CFC function? I thought that was an interesting use for it.
Brian--he did mention the onMissingMethod function in passing, and it was on a slide in our inaugural Capitol Hill User Group meeting (which also happened today) as well. He didn't mention his pet project for it so I'll have to bug him about that.
Interesting comment "CF isn't supposed to do everything". Having not been there I can't comment too much but if I'm getting this right, it sounds like Adobe are now almost /expecting/ you to use CF with some other sort of backend system such as Java or .NET, leaving CF to do what CF is very good at (i.e front end UI).
Is that the way it comes across to anyone else?
That isn't the way it came off. No technology is supposed to do everything. The point is that every technology has its strengths and weaknesses, and CF lets you interact with any technology that fits the job at hand. Personally I think it's great that they're refocusing their marketing by saying what CF's tremendous strengths are instead of saying "but we're Java too!"

No, no, not at all. But if CF doesn't do something you need to do (can't imagine that after CF8!), you can still tap the underlying technologies if absolutely necessary.
I *THINK* that may be what they meant, but I wasn't there either :)

I remember a great discussion by Ben Forta on "ColdFusion is NOT a database server" which was a good discussion of what NOT to do with CF.
That's nothing new. Why do you think we allowed you to write CFX extensions in C/C++ way back in 1996? And why do you think we added support for COM, CORBA, Java, SOAP, and so much more? I wrote a column entitled 'When Not To Use ColdFusion' back in 98 I think that explained this exact topic. CF is great at lots of things, and keeps getting better, but the best developers know that they have to use the right tools for the right parts of the job, and while it is perfectly ok to write pure CF apps when that works, there are times when you'll want to take advantage of all that extensibility.
