MAX - ColdFusion IDE BOF Notes

More raw notes from the field--the CF IDE BOF session tonight was actually really great. Lots of excellent comments and frank thoughts about the state of development tools for CF, and as always, the CF team seemed very keen to hear everyone's thoughts and is genuinely interested in making a tool that best meets our needs. Here's a PDF of my notes. This is something I'd love to discuss on a future ColdFusion Weekly so if you have thoughts to add, please give us a call or send an email.

I'll also be writing up some thoughts on the frameworks session from today (which was a bit of a marathon but was really well attended and had lots of great comments and questions), I just want to let that settle a bit before I write it up.

Comments

Thanks for the notes on the CF IDE BoF, I attended some other BoF's about Flex and reading over your notes makes me excited to see what will come of CF IDE. My vote is for a CF Eclipse IDE...
Sounds like everyone's comments were right on point. I think Eclipse would be the natural choice, especially since that was the path for Flex Builder. I think we definitely need a CF Builder!!
"? Is it important that CFEclipse is open source?
? general sentiment is that no, in and of itself the fact that CFEclipse is open source isn't
important, it simply is filling a need that isn't being met by Adobe
? if Adobe released a tool that met this need, most of the people in the session seemed willing
to pay a reasonable price for it"

Who said this? Yes, it is vitally important that CFEclipse stays open source, so that innovation can continue and development never stagnates. But, and perhaps even more importantly, IT SHOULD STAY FREE! CFEclipse has been an exceptional entry point for fledglings taking on CF who were more than grateful they didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for an overpriced piece of bloatware.

And another thing! (Whoa, becoming a rant. Think I'll stop now.)

Why f*&#-up a good thing?
Cutter--"who said this" was the people who were in the BOF session. Obviously that's a small representation, but based on what I could tell that was the consensus in the room. There are pros and cons to both approaches, so I personally wouldn't like to see CFEclipse go away, but if Adobe can offer more features more quickly at a reasonable price, it would be nice to have it as an option for those who choose to pay for it.

Interesting thing!
